J. Cole Powers His Independent DREAMER Drop With EVEN STUDIO
Five years after parting ways with PUMA, J. Cole designs, develops, and manufactures his first sneaker independently, using his own EVEN STUDIO-powered site to bring fans directly into the drop
J. Cole released his first fully independent sneaker, the DREAMER Indie 5000, through a single-day pop-up at 100 Ivan Drive in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on September 23, timed to his sold-out show at Crown Coliseum that night. Built on EVEN STUDIO, dreamerinc.com gave fans a direct line to sign up for pop-up access rather than routing the drop through a traditional retail partner. The Made in Italy shoe retailed for $200 a pair, with doors open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Indie 5000 is Cole’s first sneaker since his partnership with PUMA ended in 2021, following the RS-DREAMER and DREAMER 2. Rather than partner with another brand, Cole built the Indie 5000 under his own DREAMER label, handling design and manufacturing independently, a process he said took five years. The silhouette blends retro basketball and running shoe influences, with synthetic overlays zig-zagging across the upper and carried through the sole.
“Five years in the making,” Cole wrote in announcing the release, adding that the shoe was “designed, developed and manufactured independently.”
“At the start of the DREAMER launch, J. Cole knew he wanted to give fans in his hometown Fayetteville, NC first access. A month before the official pop-up, he used EVEN STUDIO to track fan interest to prepare inventory for the official DREAMER pop-up shop. Fans signed up on his EVEN STUDIO to secure location details, with Fayetteville residents given priority access.” — Celena Fields, Artist Relations
By routing the Indie 5000 through his own EVEN STUDIO-powered site and a single pop-up tied to his own tour date, rather than a wide retail rollout, Cole keeps full control of the release and its story, and gives his team first-party data on exactly who showed up for it.
